GASTRITIS

GASTRITIS IS A SET OF GASTROENTEROLOGICAL CONDITIONS CAUSED BY BACTERIAL INFECTION, INJURY OR OTHER FACTORS.

Gastritis could lead to ulcers or develop into a more serious chronic gastritis over a period of time, if the patient does not seek appropriate medical intervention. Use of certain pain-killers, excessive drinking can also cause gastritis.

PEPTIC ULCERS

PEPTIC ULCERS ARE SORE THAT DEVELOP INSIDE THE WALLS OF THE STOMACH OR THE UPPER HALF OF THE SMALL INTESTINE.

Stomach pain is the most common symptom of peptic ulcers. The ulcers can be of varying type such as - gastric ulcers which occur inside the stomach or duodenal ulcers which occur inside the intestines.

GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD)

THE GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS ACID REFLUX.

It is a chronic digestive disorder wherein the stomach acids or contents flow back into the esophagus. The disease is characterized by a burning sensation in the chest region, chest pain, difficulty in swallowing, dry cough and lumpy sensation in the throat. The disease is easily mistaken with heartburn due to the similarity of symptoms.

INTESTINAL METAPLASIA

INTESTINAL METAPLASIA IS A CONDITION IN WHICH THE CELLS THAT CREATE THE LINING OF THE STOMACH ARE CHANGED OR REPLACED.

The replacement cells are similar to the cells that create the lining of intestines. It is considered a pre-cancerous condition. This change may be caused by Helicobacter pylori, which can turn some parts of food into chemicals that can cause stomach cells to change.

COLON POLYPS

A COLON POLYP IS A SMALL CLUMP OF CELLS THAT FORMS ON THE LINING OF THE COLON.

Most Colon Polyps are harmless, but over time, some can develop into Colon Cancer, which is often fatal. There are two main categories of polyps, non-neoplastic and neoplastic. In general, the larger a polyp, the greater the risk of cancer, especially with neoplastic polyps.

DIVERTICULITIS

DIVERTICULITIS IS INFLAMMATION OR INFECTION OF SMALL POUCHES CALLED DIVERTICULA THAT DEVELOP ALONG THE WALLS OF INTESTINES.

The formation of pouches themselves is a relatively benign condition called Diverticulosis. Diverticulitis may involve anything from an abcess to an infection to perforation of the bowel.

CROHN'S DISEASE

CROHN'S DISEASE IS AN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE.

It causes inflammation of the digestive tract and lead to abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. Inflammation caused by Crohn's Disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract and often spreads deep into the layers of affected bowel tissues.

ENDOSCOPY

Endoscopy is a nonsurgical process used to examine a person's digestive tract. Using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it, pictures of the digestive tract can be viewed. During an upper endoscopy, the endoscope is passed through the mouth and throat to view the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the intestine. Endoscope can also be passed into the large intestine through the rectum to examine this part of the digestive tract. This procedure is called sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

FUNDOPLICATION

The main surgery for a stubborn heartburn is called Fundoplication. The surgeon can either directly touch the parts of the body (open Fundoplication) or use a special tool called a Laparoscope. The surgeon cuts into the abdomen- a large cut for open procedure or several small cuts for Laparoscopy. Then all or a part of the top part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower part of the esophagus and sewn in place. This tightens the esophagus and helps prevent the stomach acid from backing up into it.

COLONOSCOPY

Before the procedure, a medication is given to make the patient relaxed and drowsy. A Colonoscope, a long, flexible tube is inserted through the rectum to view images of the lining of the colon. Mild cramping may be felt during the procedure. During the Colonoscopy, if something abnormal is viewed, small amount of tissue may be removed for analysis.

LAPAROSCOPIC SPLENECTOMY

A splenectomy is a surgical procedure performed for the removal of the spleen. The spleen is an abdominal organ that sits beneath the ribcage, slightly to the upper left side. The primary function of the spleen is to fight infections, and filter certain wastes. The splenectomy may be required to treat a ruptured or an infected spleen - possibly caused by an abdominal injury. Some of the other cases that require a splenectomy include - spleen inflammation, certain cancers, formation of noncancerous cysts and tumors amongst others.

LAPAROSCOPIC PANCREATIC SURGERY

A pancreatic surgery is required for the treatment of disorders of the pancreas which can include - acute & chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, cysts and tumors amongst others. The pancreas is an organ that secretes several digestive juices - vital for the digestive process. And pancreatic disorders result in the excessive or deficient secretion of these vital enzymes.

LAPAROSCOPIC COLON AND RECTAL SURGERY

A laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery is required for the treatment of disorders of the colon and lower intestinal regions which can include - polyps, rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors and others. The rectum is the lower part of the colon from where the solid waste in the body gets excreted.Disorders of the rectum and the colon make it difficult for the waste from the body to be removed or causes pain & discomfort while doing so. There is occasional bleeding and possible infections as well. The infections can be very difficult to deal with and may cause additional complications, if they are not treated at the earliest.

BALLOON ASSISTED ENTEROSCOPY

Balloon assisted Enteroscopy is an incisionless procedure performed to reach and treat colon or Polyps in the digestive tract. An Endoscope is used which is equipped with balloons which inflate and deflate to pinch together the walls of the digestive tract. By compressing the walls, less accessible areas can be reached faster.
